Viridian Gym Leader
After the fight against Team Rocket the Viridian City Gym was left without a leader. Both Red and Blue tried out for the position of gym leader. Red tried out in an official challenge which took place in front of Mr. Pokémon. He easily succeeded in passing the tests required to become a Gym Leader, however he is unable to move his arms and legs properly after the battle against the Elite Four (from being frozen) and believes himself to be unqualified for the position. Blue on the other hand is able to single handedly capture rampaging Pokémon and stop the radio broadcasts (from the Pokémon League Van) that led them to rampage in the first place.
Blue always kept his dreams under wraps so it is unknown the reasoning that led him to want to take the position as a gym leader. It is possible that Blue wanted to impress his master, Chuck who is also a gym leader. Blue stepped right into his new role. Blue insisted to Mr. Pokémon that if Red couldn’t be the gym leader the Pokémon League would need to find someone with the same qualifications whether it be him or someone else. Mr. Pokémon believed that because Blue was understanding about the league’s mistakes (the radio broadcasts) that Blue should be the new gym leader.
At first glance Blue’s acceptance of the position could be perceived as selfish, considering he lost to Red in the Pokémon League Championship, and the proceeded to take Red’s dream of being a Gym Leader from under his nose, however it would be impossible for Blue to be more selfless. Regardless of whether or not it was Blue’s dream, he took up the position in order to live out Red's dream because Red was unable to become a gym leader himself. Red understood Blue’s intentions and encouraged the Pokémon League to make Blue the new gym leader by throwing out comments such as “he was a semi-finalist in the Pokémon League Championship, you know” and “he’s definitely worthy of being my rival”. Blue was even the person who found the springs where Red could regain the use of his arms and legs, so that he could one day fight as a gym leader. He went so far as to lend Red his Charizard so he could make the trip there. For Red and Blue, the goal of becoming Viridian City Gym Leader was one they accomplished together.
