The original Pokémon game series let the player live the life of Red, a young boy from Pallet Town whose dream is to be a Pokémon Master. As Red sets out for his journey he has to face challenges from his next door neighbor and rival Blue. Both Red and Blue are given starter Pokémon and told to complete the Pokédex. Blue is constantly rushing ahead of Red in his attempts to become better than Red. The two battle every step of the way as they each work to earn the 8 Kanto Gym Badges and defeat the Elite Four.
Every time Red reaches a new goal, Blue is there waiting to try and knock him down. The game hinges on the player's ability, as Red, to overcome all of Blue's challenges. When Red finally reaches the Elite Four he learns that Blue is once again a step ahead of him. Blue became the Pokémon Champion and Red's final challenge is to beat Blue once again. If the player is playing a Generation I Game, the story ends once Blue falls. On the other hand, if the player is playing a Generation III Game, the story continues as Red and Blue journey to The Sevii Islands.
After the success of the original games Nintendo released a 2nd Generation of Pokémon Games. The new games take place three years after the original, in a new region with new characters. The new trainers have an expanded goal to collect both the 8 badges from the Johto Region and the 8 badges from the Kanto Region. Blue and Red both appear in these games once the player reaches the Kanto Region. In the years since the previous games, Blue has become the Viridian City Gym Leader while Red trains in solitude on Mt. Silver.
