Blue Vs. Green

Since the Pokémon franchise went international there has been a lot of debate over Blue versus Green. Green is the original name and would normally be the “true name”, however outside of Japan Blue has become far more popular than Green. Although both colors are fitting for the character, I find that Blue is a more accurate name in relation to his personality.

The color green represents harmony, growth, and fertility; however it doesn’t have any visible properties in Blue’s personality. Blue is often at odds with his family and Red in the Pokémon games. He acts out and doesn’t respect his Pokémon. In the manga, Blue is constantly trying to help his friends and family. He is always training to make himself stronger and never backs down. Neither of the Blues have any form of harmony in their lives. Both versions of Blue grow emotionally throughout their respective series however neither of them show any physical growth. Even though time passes, they show minimal changes in height or build. When the fertility aspect of the color is brought up, Blue’s status is completely unknown. Both versions of Blue have some characteristics reminiscent of shades of green, but overall they don’t hold a candle to the color blue.

Blue (the color) is far more representative of Blue’s character. The color blue signifies wisdom, confidence, and loyalty. The Blue of the manga is extremely wise. He always strategizes and considers all options before he attacks. During the battle against Team Rocket, Blue uses the element of surprise to attack Koga and claim victory over him. Both the Blue of the manga and the Blue of the game are extremely confident. In the manga, Blue has a cool confidence. He believes in his skills and will even put his life in danger if he knows his Pokémon can protect him. The Blue in the games, is overconfident, he makes himself believe that he is better than Red is at training Pokémon and never accepts a loss easily. Both Blue’s are loyal however; they aren’t loyal in the same sense of the word. In the manga, Blue is loyal to his family and friends. He always goes out of his way to save his grandfather or protect his home town. In the games, Blue tries his hardest to show loyalty to his grandfather by completing his Pokédex. Blue’s actions can’t really be called “loyal” in the usual sense, because he just wants the love and attention his grandfather denies him. Blue’s desire to be loved and protected however, could signify that Blue is loyal to himself.
